Staff

We are delighted to welcome Katrina Dunford to the surgery, who has taken over from Nikki as receptionist.  Katrina has previously worked in a GP surgery and is settling in quickly as part of the team.

Reception Refurbishment

The reception has undergone a refurbishment over the last two weeks; the reception window has been opened up to give a more open and friendly feel, the office has been redecorated and had new carpet and work surfaces.  We hope you like it !

Travel Vaccinations

Please let us know at least 6 weeks before you travel if you think you may need vaccinations.  You will need to complete a form which is available either on the website or at reception.  The nurses will review what you may require and contact you to advise if an appointment is required.

Equipment Fund

We held an Easter raffle which raised £107 towards the equipment fund which we are delighted to say has brought the current amount raised through both the raffle and book selling to £296.71.  We would like to say thank you to the winner of the 1st prize who donated their cash prize of £20 back to the fund.

Thank you to everyone who has donated.

Surgery Closures

The local surgeries have four closures a year for staff training.  These closures will be held on a Thursday afternoon from 1pm – 6pm, we have a provisional date of 21st July but this is still to be confirmed.

During the time we are closed you can contact the Out of hours’ service on 111, or call 999 if you have an emergency.  Posters will be displayed at the surgery at least a month prior to the closures giving these contact details.

Annual Survey

After discussion with the Patient Group it has been agreed that we will not be carrying out an annual survey this year.  It was felt that the response was diminishing, probably due to the fact that everyone gets inundated with surveys.  However, you are able to give feedback to the surgery in the following ways:

  • Complete a ‘Friends and Family’ online survey which can be found on our website : www.swaveseysurgery.nhs.uk
  • Comment on the NHS Choices website : www.nhs.uk for Swavesey Surgery
  • Complete a ‘Friends and Family’ feedback form which can be found in the entrance hall.
  • Complete a ‘comment form’ and place it in the ‘suggestion box in the waiting room

We are always pleased to receive your comments and feedback.

Dr Anil Jain and the staff would

like to wish all their patients

best wishes for

2016!

When to use your local pharmacy…..

All common conditions can be treated with a medication that is available to buy over the counter from your local pharmacy, such as:

coughs, colds, sore throats, hayfever, allergies, skin rashes, upset stomach, diarrhoea, constipation, colic, piles, headache/migraine, toothache, eczema, threadworm, lice, scabies, athletes foot, cold sores, ringworm, fungal nail infections, conjunctivitis

Antibiotics do not work against infections such as coughs and colds caused by viruses.  Viral infections are much more common than bacterial infections.

Equipment Fund

We have set up an equipment fund for Swavesey Surgery and will initially be raising money towards the purchase of a dermatoscope to assist in the diagnosis of skin cancer.

In order to start this off we have set up a bookcase where second hand books can be purchased for a small donation.  Any books you can donate would be welcome.

All donations towards the surgery fund will be greatly received.

FLU Vaccination

The influenza vaccination is offered to all those aged 65 and over and those considered in an ‘at risk’ group, including carers.  If you are unsure whether you are eligible please ask at reception.

We will be holding a Saturday morning flu clinic on:

Saturday 3rd October

please phone the surgery to book an appointment

Childhood Flu

The flu nasal vaccine is going to be available for 2, 3 and 4 year olds from the end of October.  A letter will be sent to the parents/guardians of all eligible children inviting them to make an appointment.

Meningococcal ACWY Vaccination

Public Health England have identified a continuing increase in the MenW disease in England and Wales since 2009.  To reduce the rapid increase in this disease a vaccination programme has been implemented.  This vaccine will also provide protection against meningococcal types A, C and Y.

Those in the 2014/15 school year 13 have been assessed as the priority cohort for vaccination, therefore this is actively being offered to those who are aged 18 years on 31st August 2015.

Letters will be sent to all those eligible inviting them to make an appointment.

Those aged between 19-25 are also eligible to receive this vaccine and it is recommended for those attending university/further education for the first time. Please book an appointment with the practice nurse.

Meningococcal B Infant vaccination

The MenB vaccination is a new three dose programme for babies aged two, four and 12-13 months of age and will be offered routinely at your child’s immunisation appointments.

The meningococcal disease is more common in children under five years, with a higher number of cases in babies under 12 months of age and peak incidence at five months, therefore the two doses at two and four months constitute the ‘primary course’ required to ensure optimum protection for babies ahead of peak incidence at five months.  The third dose at 12-13 months provides longer term protection.

Surgery Closure afternoon

 Thursday 17th September between 1pm – 6pm.

We are pleased that Lisa Jones is going to continue to work with us as our diabetes nurse alongside her role as practice nurse at York Street Surgery.

We are delighted to welcome Jan Rix who is a very experienced practice nurse and specialises in respiratory conditions.

Our nursing team will now consist of Fiona Edwards, Lisa Jones and Jan Rix.

Dr Roxana Schreiber has decided that due to family commitments she will be leaving and moving to Australia.  She has thoroughly enjoyed working at Swavesey and is sad to be going.

Dr Anil Jain joined the surgery a year ago and has been working as a partner with Dr Schreiber, he will now be our Lead GP and will be working full time.

  Self Check-in Screen

We are proud to announce that we now have a self check-in screen.  This will enable you to notify us that you have arrived for your appointment, without having to wait for the receptionist who may be busy with another patient, or on the phone.

Vaccinations

Shingles

Shingles is a debilitating condition which occurs more frequently and tends to be more severe in older people.

From September 2013 routine vaccinations will be available to people aged 70 years old to provide protection against shingles, there will also be a catch up programme for people aged 79 years.

The efficiency of the vaccine declines with age and so it is not recommended for people aged 80 years or older.

Flu

The routine annual flu immunisation programme has been extended to all childred aged 2 and 3 years from September 2013.  The vaccine will be given as a nasal spray.

Letters will be sent out to all eligible patients inviting them to make an appointment during September/October.

Patient Reference Group –  How to get involved in your care!

We would like to see more patients involved in our patient group.  The group is friendly and informal and meets every 2-3 months for an hour on a Friday afternoon.  You can also be a part of our group as a ‘virtual member’ in which we can communicate with you by email if you cannot attend the meetings.

It is really important for the surgery to receive opinions and feedback from you as patients in order for us to keep improving our service and level of care.

If you would like to be a part of the patient reference group please let our receptionists know; or if you would like to discuss it in more detail please contact Lorna Gardiner, Practice Manager.

  Care Quality Commission (CQC)

We are now registered by the CQC under the Health and Social Care Act 2008.  Inspections will begin to take place to ensure that as an NHS Primary Medical provider we are compliant with the national standards of quality and safety.

Reports will be available to view on the CQC website www.cqc.org.uk.  A Guide for Working Together - The CQC and Patient Participation Groups can also be found on the website, this explains how you can share information with the CQC about your care and experiences.

Appointment System

We have made a small change to our appointment booking system; the number of appointments that are available each day for pre-booking has increased.  You are able to book doctors and nurses appointments up to 2 months ahead.  When it is necessary to be seen on the day then ‘emergency’ appointments are still available.

If all appointments have been taken and you consider it an emergency we may ask that the doctor or nurse telephone you to discuss and assess your problem.

Surgery Closure

The surgery will be closed for staff training from midday on Thursday 20th June 2013 and will re-open again on Friday 21st June 2013 at 8am.

If you have an emergency and need to speak to a doctor during this time then please call Urgent Care Cambridgeshire on 0330 123 9131.

Childhood Immunisations

A number of changes to the national immunisation programme are being made during 2013-14.

Meningitis C: From June 2013, there are changes to the current schedule for administering the MenC conjugate vaccine. The second dose currently given at four months will be replaced by a booster dose given in adolescence. The initial change will be to cease giving the four month dose from 1 June 2013.

Rotavirus:  The introduction of rotavirus vaccination for babies at two and three months.

Rotavirus is a very common and potentially serious large bowel infection of young babies.

The new vaccine will be included in the programme from 1 July 2013. The vaccine will be offered routinely to all babies at the age of two months and again at three months (that is, two doses, four weeks apart) when they attend for their first and second routine childhood immunisations.
